|Anthony Mann knows New York from the inside out. Touring the brand-new Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History with his two young children, he cannot help but point out its spectacular lighting and mention its state-of-the-art fiber-optic cabling.|
Ditto for the World Trade Center, where Mr. Mann marvels at the extraordinary security system, stitched together with mile upon mile of high-capacity cable.
Mr. Mann is the president of E-J Electrical Construction, and those projects, plus many others, are his.
One hundred and one years and three generations of Manns after the Long Island City, Queens-based company was founded, the seven-year rule of the current generation has been a smash. Anthony Mann not only has been instrumental in doubling revenues to $90 million and the staff to 550 in the last five years alone, but also has added telecom and service divisions and opened two new offices.
“Tony is both extremely bright and really understands how the industry works,” observes Louis Coletti, chairman of the Building Trades Employers’ Association.
He also is no slouch as a leader. At Hackley, an exclusive Westchester private school, he was captain of both the soccer and swim teams. At Tufts, Mr. Mann found time to launch and manage the most profitable student-run company—a coffee shop and newsstand—and he became chairman of the umbrella company for all student-run businesses.
Before moving on to business school at Northwestern University, Mr. Mann took a summer job in the vast Procter & Gamble empire, which only reinforced his resolve to join E-J. “What I like about our business is that you can see the results,” he says.
