An emailer reminds me that Judge Alito has already done ajudicial favor for the Bush family: \

Back in the day, there was an extremely ill-managed security company, now defunct, named Stratesec. As some readers may recall, the company boasted in its SEC filings of fulfilling every big security need from fences to guards to armored vehicles to electronic badging and access control. The company succeeded in attracting a string of investors and backers, and from 1993 to 2000, its board of directors included Marvin P. Bush, youngest brother of George W. Bush.

The company touted longstanding relationships to a few major security clients, and listed several of the biggest, some of whom paid millions for security services, on its public filings. The list of big names for several years, prominently displayed with illustrations on the IPO brochure, included the World Trade Center, Dulles and Reagan National Airports, and United Airlines.

Stratesec started out as a company called Securacom. The original company was the well-regarded engineering firm Burns & Roe Securacom* which did some of the security detailing for the World Trade Center. However, in 1992 – soon after the first Gulf War -- Burns & Roe became Securacom: its management changed hands accompanying an infusion of capital from the ruling family of Kuwait, the Al Sabahs, two of whom joined its board. At this time Marvin Bush also joined the board, clearly connecting family and Al Sabah interests and presumably part of a bigger package of Bush family rewards after the U.S. kicked Iraq out of Kuwait.

A former colleague of the head of the company, Wirt Dexter Walker III, suggested to me that Walker is a distant relative of the Bush family. While any blood relationship to the Bush Walkers would have to be remote (the first Wirt D. Walker, two generations ago, was based in Chicago; the second in McLean, Virginia, in the DIA), there is no doubt that the company, Kuwait’s Al Sabahs, and Bush financial interests were closely linked for years. Management and control at Wirt Walker’s other companies, a small airplane company named Commander Aircraft (also bankrupt) and a private investment firm named KuwAm (short for Kuwait-American Corporation), were inextricably linked to management and control at Securacom.

All three companies were headquartered at the Watergate, in office space leased by the Saudi and Kuwaiti governments.

Stratesec is bankrupt and no longer exists; Commander Aircraft later became Aviation General, also bankrupt; and the Watergate has been sold to new owners. The Watergate building also housed one of the numerous branches of Riggs Bank, which has been effectively dismantled by SEC action. The head of the SEC during this operation was longtime Bush supporter William O. Donaldson, a classmate of Jonathan Bush, uncle to George W. and a Riggs executive.

Well-connected Riggs was widely considered to be an Agency bank (CIA) and was the bank used by about 95% of foreign embassies in Washington. Saudi accounts at Riggs were linked by investigators to some of the 9/11 hijackers.

Mishal al Sabah, a younger member of the ruling al Sabah family, was a son of one Emir and son-in-law (then ex-son-in-law) of the Emir who recently died. Mishal al Sabah served as officer and director in all three of Wirt Walker’s companies off and on for years and even lived with Walker when he first came to the U.S. He is now abroad and unlikely to return to the U.S., according to private sources, since he faces arrest on contempt charges stemming from a federal civil lawsuit in which he and Walker are defendants.

Walker is being sued in different cases in federal courts in D.C. and Georgia. By all accounts a colorful character, Walker is no stranger to lawsuits. Earlier he tried to force a company already named Securacomm to give up its name, similar to that of Securacom. He ended up losing the case (Securacomm v. Securacom) but not before engaging in some hardball tactics endorsed by the firm’s directors including Marvin Bush. (Incidentally, Marvin Bush has also been in another legal dispute over naming matters. TBC in another blog. Neither Bush nor the White House has responded to questions; Walker did speak with me more than once.)

One of the few good days for Walker and Securacom in court occurred before a three-judge panel including Alito. This ruling did not ultimately cause a good outcome for the company but did figure in Walker’s SEC filings shortly afterward:

I've come across the claim that Wirt Walker is a relative of George W Bush on numerous internet pages, most often claiming they were "cousins"", but so far I haven't seen anything to support this claim.

The only actual source for them being even distant relatives, seems to be your blog entry, and the article published by the Washington Spectator Online.

I've been trying to look into the validity of the claim and I therefor wonder what the former collegue said, what the basis of his/her assertion is, and possibly the name and/or contact info of mr Walkers former collegue.

I would appreciate any help!

The company, then known as Stratesec, was delisted from the American Stock Exchange in July 2002 due to inability to make financing payments to ES Bankest, it's primary shareholder, and other financial problems.

2 August 2007 (RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders says it is pleased that two burglars have been convicted of the murder of French journalist Grégoire de Bourgues on 2 August 2006 in Kazakhstan but it condemns the Kazakh judicial system’s failure to clarify the still unresolved aspects of the case. One of the burglars was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The other got 17 years. On the first anniversary of French journalist Grégoire de Bourgues’ murder in Kazakhstan, Reporters Without Borders said on 2 August 2007 that it was obviously pleased that two people have been convicted of killing him but it condemned the Kazakh judicial system’s failure to shed full light on the case. "Many questions are still unresolved one year after this young French journalist’s death and the authorities seem to have tried to protect the country’s image abroad rather than render justice to the victim’s family," the press freedom organisation said. "We hope that the roles of all those who have been implicated in this murder will be established during the appeal hearing and we urge the authorities to keep looking for the third suspect, who is still on the run." A court in Almaty convicted Almaz Oralbayev and Salavat Bolgonbayev on 30 April of murdering De Bourgues in his Almaty apartment on 2 August 2006. Oralbayev was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Bolgonbayev got 17 years. The hardest evidence presented in court was a pistol belonging to Oralbayev’s brother on which traces of de Bourgues’ blood was found. The journalist’s laptop was also found at the home of a friend of Oralbayev’s in the town of Aktau. Oralbayev said he had wanted to get rid of the laptop because he knew the authorities wanted him for the murder. The two defendants accused the police of subjecting them to psychological and physical pressure. They said they were forced to leave their fingerprints on various objects and were threatened with reprisals against their families if they did not confess to killing de Bourgues because he happened to be at home while they were burgling his apartment. The leading witness was de Bourgues’ interpreter, who was present during the break-in. Her account of the events changed during the trial. After initially saying that one of the three intruders was of Slavic origin, she subsequently said all three were of Asiatic origin. The defence claimed during the trial that she changed her story after talking to the police, who had persuaded her to make sure there were no discrepancies between her version and the police version. She also said she recognised Bolgonbayev’s voice. Aged 24, de Bourgues was murdered after going to Kazakhstan with the intention of staying for three months to help prepare an advertising feature which the Kazakh government had commissioned from SML Strategic Media. The police said he had the misfortune to be killed by three burglars who broke into his apartment and stole between 4,000 and 5,000 euros, a laptop and a mobile phone. Reporters Without Borders visited Almaty from 20 to 24 September 2006 to investigate the case. During the visit, the deputy interior ministry undertook to allow the de Bourgues family and their lawyers and representatives to have access to the case file and to attend any trial that took place. Meanwhile, the family had filed a request in Paris on 8 September for a French judicial investigation, which was assigned to investigating judge Olivier Deparis. After being granted civil party status in this investigation on 20 November, Reporters Without Borders urged Deparis to travel to Kazakhstan as soon as possible. The trial of the two alleged killers began in Almaty on 31 January. 9/11 First Responder Wins $I Million

Nice Stories

Here is a nice Christmas Eve (day!) story that has zero to do with the contentious health care debate, the economy, people being held hostage in post offices, or ordering coffee after being stabbed by a steak knife. This story is just plain nice: Detective Sergeant Mike Kosowski, a 9/11 first responder defeated a four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner to win $1 million. Get the tissues out folks. It gets better.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Fran Kosowski heard these words over the telephone from her NYPD husband — “I’m OK, we’re going in.” A short time later, walking in the door after picking up their children from school, she saw one of the World Trade Center buildings collapse. Trying to keep it together, she gave an instinctive answer when the kids asked, “Where’s Daddy?” “Probably helping people,” she said. Mike came home to his family in Staten Island on September 11 covered head-to-toe in soot. Fran says the whites of his eyes were bloody. “He said, ‘I’m taking a shower and going back,’” Fran recalled. “And I said, ‘Oh no you’re not.’ He had something to eat and I think he slept a little bit, but he went back. “For days, with smoke coming out of the World Trade Center, he would say, ‘Why aren’t I dead?’ We had to figure out how to handle this. I think of [survival] as God’s way of saying you still have something to do. Little by little we started to work through it.” Because Mike was thrown 10 feet by an explosion while trying to evacuate people from the World Financial Center, he herniated three discs in his neck and two in his back. He calls the highlight of the day finding out he didn’t lose any men in his charge. In addition to the chronic pain in his legs, he developed asthma from spending so much time at the Ground Zero rescue effort in the ensuing months. After 21 years on the force and the Medal of Valor for his actions that day, he retired in 2004.

And then five years later he entered a poker competition, based on a dream (literally) and then he won a million dollars, which he is going to use to help people. I told you it was nice. You can read the whole thing here. [h/t @SherKro]
